Adam's Peak Night Hike
You climb thousands of cement and stone steps through the night on the shortest and steepest pilgrim trail to the 2,243 m summit, lit by electric lights in season. At sunrise the peak casts a triangular shadow on the plain below.

- Where
- Central Province, Sri Lanka
- Time
- 2.5-3 hours up, 1.5-2 hours down
The route
Sri Pada (Adam's Peak) by the Hatton-Nallathanni (Dalhousie) route, climbed overnight for sunrise.
Start at Dalhousie (Nallathanniya). Take the train to Hatton, then a bus from Hatton or Maskeliya to Dalhousie, and stay the night there before the climb.
When to go
The pilgrimage season runs from December to May, when the trail is lit; outside it, heavy rain, strong wind and thick mist make the climb hard.
Before you go
- Stay in Dalhousie and start in the early hours to reach the top for sunrise.
- Avoid weekends, public holidays, poya (full moon) days and school holidays, when the queue at the top can be 2 km long.
- Bring warm layers for the wait at the summit.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip that you have already worn in
- At least 1.5 litres of water
- Food you will actually want to eat
- A warm or waterproof layer
- The route, saved offline
- Sun cream and a hat
Getting ready for it
If your longest walk lately is under two hours, do a few longer walks first, ideally with some climbing and the pack you will carry.
Step-ups and lunges twice a week make the descents much easier on your knees.
Staying safe
- On busy days you can wait 12 hours or more in the queue near the top.
- Outside the December to May season the steps are unlit and the weather is poor.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
- Turn around if the weather turns or the footing gets sketchy. The trail will still be there.
