Kerala Backwaters Canoe
You move slowly along narrow canals linked to Vembanad Lake, past coconut groves, paddy fields in Kuttanad farmed up to 2 m below sea level, and villages where people still make coir rope and mats. Kingfishers, fishermen and villagers travelling by boat are common sights.

The route
Country-boat or small-canoe trip through the village canals around Alappuzha and Kuttanad.
Trips leave from Alappuzha, about 2 hours by train from Kochi or 1 hour 45 minutes by bus. Book directly with an operator rather than through touts.
When to go
September to March is the best time; the June to August monsoon brings heavy wind and rain.
Before you go
- Book with the boat operator directly, online or in person, not through commission-taking touts.
- Ask to stop at a village toddy shop for toddy and grilled prawns.
- Bring binoculars: Pathiramanal island in Vembanad Lake is known for migratory birds.
- In August, the Nehru Trophy snake boat race is held on the second Saturday of the month.

- A buoyancy aid, worn rather than stowed
- A dry bag for your phone and keys
- Water and snacks
- Sun cream, a hat and sunglasses
- A warm layer, even on a hot day
Getting ready for it
Paddling works your back, shoulders and core more than your arms.
A few weeks of rows, pull-ups or pulldowns and some rotational core work will make a full day far more comfortable.

- Do not swim unless you are a strong, experienced swimmer: the water is deep and currents can be strong, especially during and after the monsoon.
- Check the wind and water forecast before launching.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
