Lake Toba Paddle

You paddle between the villages of Tongging and Silalahi on Lake Toba, a caldera lake about 100 km long, up to 505 m deep and 900 m above sea level. Indonesia's official tourism site lists this as the easy route; the longer routes are Tongging to Samosir and a full circuit of the north.

The route

Tongging to Silalahi kayak route on Lake Toba.

The route starts at Tongging. You can reach the Lake Toba area by flying to Kualanamu International Airport in Medan or to Sisingamangaraja XII Airport, or by public bus from Medan to Parapat (176 km, under 6 hours).

Before you go

  • Arrange kayaks and support with a local operator before you travel; the official page does not name rental points.
  • For more of a challenge, the official site also lists Tongging to Samosir (50 km, Medium) and the Northern Circle (175 km, Demanding).
  • Water quality varies around the lake because of fish farming, so ask locally before you swim.
  • At 900 m the lake is cooler than Medan, so bring a layer for the mornings.

What to bring

  • A buoyancy aid, worn rather than stowed
  • A dry bag for your phone and keys
  • Water and snacks
  • Sun cream, a hat and sunglasses
  • A warm layer, even on a hot day

Getting ready for it

Paddling works your back, shoulders and core more than your arms.

A few weeks of rows, pull-ups or pulldowns and some rotational core work will make a full day far more comfortable.

Staying safe

  • It is a large, deep lake: stay near the shore and paddle with others or with a guide.
  • Check the wind and water forecast before launching.
  • Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
