Lake Pátzcuaro Boat Trip to Janitzio
The usual way onto Lake Pátzcuaro is the launch from the main pier to Janitzio, an island village topped by a 40 m monument to José María Morelos that you can climb inside for views over the lake. On the way you may see fishermen show the traditional butterfly-shaped nets.

- Where
- Michoacan, Mexico
- Time
- about 25 minutes each way by boat
The route
Boat trip from Pátzcuaro's main pier to Janitzio island.
Boats leave from the main pier on the edge of Pátzcuaro; if you arrive by bus, get off at the Pemex station as you enter town, a few blocks from the dock. Purépecha buses run from Morelia about every 30 minutes between 6:00 and 20:00.
When to go
Boats run all year; the first two days of November (Day of the Dead) bring very large crowds and long queues at the pier.
Permits and fees
No permit is needed; buy a return boat ticket at the pier. Boats run regularly from about 7:30 to 18:00.
Before you go
- Book accommodation well ahead if you plan to come for Day of the Dead.
- The lake lies at 2,035 m and the town at about 2,200 m, so evenings are cool.
- The lake has six main islands, including Pacanda (the largest), Yunuén and Urandén, if you want to go beyond Janitzio.
What to bring
- Sun cream, a hat and sunglasses
- Water
- A light layer for the breeze on the water
- Cash for the fare and anything you buy on the way
Staying safe
- Wear a life jacket if the boat provides one, and stay seated while it is moving.
- Tell someone where you are going and when you expect to be back.
