Juniper Springs Run Canoe Trip
Paddle a narrow, winding spring run under a thick canopy of old-growth forest through the Juniper Prairie Wilderness of Ocala National Forest; near the end the run opens into wetlands full of wading birds. There are very few places firm enough to get out of the boat.

- Where
- Florida, USA
- Distance
- 11 km (7 miles) one way
The route
Juniper Run: Juniper Springs Recreation Area to the State Road 19 take-out.
Launch just below the springs at Juniper Springs Recreation Area on State Road 40, between Ocala and Ormond Beach. The concessionaire, Naventure, rents kayaks and runs a shuttle back from the take-out on State Road 19, first come, first served.
When to go
Popular all year. Winter days can be cool, and summer afternoons often bring thunderstorms.
Permits and fees
No permit, but entry to the recreation area is charged through Naventure; an annual day-use pass covers Juniper, Alexander, Silver Glen and Salt Springs. Check Naventure for current fees and hours.
Before you go
- If you bring your own canoe or kayak, you must launch before 1 pm, and any shuttle vehicle must be in place before you set off.
- Inflatable boats, tubes and rafts are not allowed, and neither are pets or disposable containers such as foil, plastic cups and wrappers.
- Canoeing and kayaking are the only activities allowed on the run; there is no wading or fishing in the springs or runs.
- Weekends fill up and the site may close when it reaches capacity, so arrive early or have a back-up plan.
What to bring
- A buoyancy aid, worn rather than stowed
- A dry bag for your phone and keys
- Water and snacks
- Sun cream, a hat and sunglasses
- A warm layer, even on a hot day
Getting ready for it
Paddling works your back, shoulders and core more than your arms.
A few weeks of rows, pull-ups or pulldowns and some rotational core work will make a full day far more comfortable.
Staying safe
- The first few miles pass under many low-hanging branches, and the channel varies a lot in width and depth.
- Places to pull out are very limited, so be ready to paddle the whole run once you start.
- Check the wind and water forecast before launching.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
