Ubud Rice Terrace Bike Ride

You ride mostly downhill from the Mount Batur rim at Kintamani towards Ubud on quiet village lanes. Tours stop at rice paddies, a Balinese family compound, village temples, big banyan trees and plantations of cloves, coffee, cocoa and vanilla.

The route

Kintamani to Ubud downhill village ride (guided tour).

Tours start at Penelokan on the Kintamani rim, or nearby villages such as Abuan, usually after breakfast with a view of Mount Batur and its crater lake. Operators collect you from your hotel, free from the Ubud area and for an extra charge from the south coast resorts.

Permits and fees

Most people go with a tour that supplies the bike, helmet, guide, support vehicle and hotel transfers. Prices and inclusions vary by operator, so compare before you book.

Before you go

  • Pick a tour with a support vehicle following the group, so you can stop riding if the heat gets to you.
  • Wear closed-toe shoes and bring sunscreen, a hat and some cash.
  • Want more effort? One operator adds 6-8 km of flat and uphill riding for fitter guests.
  • Families can join: operators take children from about 5 and offer child seats for younger ones.

What to bring

  • Helmet
  • Spare tube, tyre levers and a pump
  • Water and snacks
  • Front and rear lights
  • A layer for descents and stops

Getting ready for it

Plan for a long day: 2-3 hours of cycling (7-10 hours with transfers and stops).

Time in the saddle matters more than speed.

If you have not ridden for a while, do two or three rides of an hour or two first so your legs and your seat are used to it.

Staying safe

  • The route is mostly downhill on public village roads, so control your speed and follow the guide.
  • Operators do not recommend the ride for people with serious heart conditions or limited mobility.
  • Wear bright clothing and use lights wherever there is traffic.
  • Check your brakes and tyres before you leave.
