Okanagan Rail Trail Bike Ride
From the Km 0 gateway in Coldstream you ride south on crushed gravel along the shore of Kalamalka Lake, past the interpretive site at Km 4 and Kekuli Bay Provincial Park, towards Oyama and Wood Lake. The trail is a low-grade former railway planned at 52 km from Coldstream to Kelowna, but it is not yet continuous: a gap of nearly 7 km remains north of Kelowna International Airport.

The route
Kalamalka Lake section, from Km 0 in Coldstream.
Start at Km 0 in Coldstream, where a gateway kiosk has maps, or at Kekuli Bay Provincial Park, 11 km south of Vernon off Highway 97. Parking is limited at trail access points.
When to go
The trail is used all year, but several sections and the washrooms are not maintained in winter.
Before you go
- In summer, use the Regional District parking lot above Kekuli Bay Provincial Park, off Highway 97, rather than the park lot.
- E-bikes are allowed; gas-powered bikes and other motor vehicles are not.
- Keep right, pass on the left, ring your bell when passing and keep dogs on a leash.
- Kekuli Bay Provincial Park, right on the trail, has a pebble beach and swimming area for a break.
What to bring
- Helmet
- Spare tube, tyre levers and a pump
- Water and snacks
- Front and rear lights
- A layer for descents and stops
Getting ready for it
Time in the saddle matters more than speed.
If you have not ridden for a while, do two or three rides of an hour or two first so your legs and your seat are used to it.
Staying safe
- Summers are hot: wear light layers, carry plenty of water and think about where you will find shade.
- Wear bright clothing and use lights wherever there is traffic.
- Check your brakes and tyres before you leave.
