Lake District Catbells Hike
You climb the north ridge of Catbells from Hawse End on the west shore of Derwentwater, over the lower top of Skelgill Bank to the rocky 451 m summit, with views over Derwentwater, Bassenthwaite Lake and the surrounding fells.

The route

Most walkers start at Hawse End, about 5 km (3 miles) from Keswick. The Keswick Launch sails from Keswick to Hawse End jetty, so you can arrive by boat.
When to go
The Keswick Launch runs all year to a timetable, but check its service status on the day, as sailings can be limited.
Before you go
- After the climb, you can walk the flat lakeshore path from Hawse End to High Brandlehow (1.5-2 miles) and pick up the launch there.
- Well-behaved dogs travel free on the launch.
- Strong walkers can continue along the ridge to Maiden Moor and High Spy.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip that you have already worn in
- At least 1.5 litres of water
- Food you will actually want to eat
- A warm or waterproof layer
- The route, saved offline
- Sun cream and a hat
Getting ready for it
If your longest walk lately is under two hours, do a few longer walks first, ideally with some climbing and the pack you will carry.
Step-ups and lunges twice a week make the descents much easier on your knees.
Staying safe
- Near the top, the north ridge has a steep but straightforward rocky scramble in two steps.
- Keep away from the old lead mine workings at Yewthwaite and Brandlehow on the fell's slopes.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
- Turn around if the weather turns or the footing gets sketchy. The trail will still be there.
