Lake Bled and Vintgar Gorge Hike
You walk out of Bled to the Vintgar Gorge, follow 1.6 km of wooden walkways through the gorge, and return to the visitor centre on the 4.1 km King of Triglav Trail. Back in Bled, the 6 km path round the lake covers asphalt and sandy ground along the shore.

- Where
- Bled, Slovenia
- Distance
- About 20 km on foot in total: 4 km each way between Bled and the gorge, the 5.7 km gorge circuit and the 6 km lake path
- Time
- About 3 hours for the gorge circuit, 50 minutes each way from Bled and 1.5 hours round the lake
The route
Bled to the Vintgar Gorge on foot, the gorge's one-way circuit, and the Lake Bled shore path.
Start in Bled, which has a bus station. The gorge is about 4 km (50 minutes) away on marked footpaths; if you would rather ride, the Vintgar shuttle leaves central Bled every 15 minutes.
When to go
The gorge opens from April into the autumn, with dates that depend on the weather and hours that change through the season; it closes in winter.
Permits and fees
Vintgar needs an all-in-one pass (€15 adults, €5 children up to 15, and a separate pass for dogs) bought online for a time slot or at the central Vintgar car park. Passes are not sold at the Vintgar Visitor Centre.
Before you go
- The gorge route is one-way: once in, you must walk the whole gorge and return on the King of Triglav Trail.
- Buy your Vintgar pass online in advance to secure a time slot.
- Wear hiking shoes; strollers and wheelchairs are not allowed in the gorge, and swimming and drones are banned.
- You can swim in Lake Bled at the marked bathing sites, where the water reaches 20-24°C in summer.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip that you have already worn in
- At least 1.5 litres of water
- Food you will actually want to eat
- A warm or waterproof layer
- The route, saved offline
- Sun cream and a hat
Getting ready for it
If your longest walk lately is under two hours, do a few longer walks first, ideally with some climbing and the pack you will carry.
Step-ups and lunges twice a week make the descents much easier on your knees.
Staying safe
- Vintgar stays open in rain but can close in extreme weather, with refunds.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
- Turn around if the weather turns or the footing gets sketchy. The trail will still be there.
