- Where
- Reine, Norway
- Distance
- 2 km return
- Time
- 1-2 hours
- Difficulty
- Moderate
The route
Reinebringen from Reine by the stone 'Sherpa steps'.
From the parking at Reine outer harbour (Reine Ytre Havn), walk through the village towards the main road and follow the old road outside the tunnel to the foot of the steps. The nearest bus stop is Reine kryss.
When to go
May to September; Visit Norway strongly advises against the hike in winter.
Before you go
- Wear sturdy shoes and bring water, a windproof jacket and dry spare clothes.
- Visit Norway suggests hiking in the midnight sun season for fewer people.
- The summit gets crowded and the route is not recommended for young children.
- Keep to the marked path and steps.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip that you have already worn in
- At least 1.5 litres of water
- Food you will actually want to eat
- A warm or waterproof layer
- The route, saved offline
- Sun cream and a hat
Getting ready for it
If your longest walk lately is under two hours, do a few longer walks first, ideally with some climbing and the pack you will carry.
Step-ups and lunges twice a week make the descents much easier on your knees.
Staying safe
- Do not try it in winter: tourists regularly get stuck and need rescuing.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
- Turn around if the weather turns or the footing gets sketchy. The trail will still be there.
