Isla Holbox Sand Roads Bike Ride
Holbox has no paved roads, only sand streets, and most people get around by bike, golf cart or on foot. You can ride west from the village towards Punta Cocos and east towards Punta Mosquito, where flamingos often feed off the beaches.

- Where
- Quintana Roo, Mexico
The route
Holbox village to Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito on the island's sand streets.
Take the ferry from Chiquilá (25-30 minutes, every half hour from 6:00 to 21:30). ADO buses run from Cancún to Chiquilá in about 2.5-3.5 hours.
When to go
Whale shark tours run from late May to September, peaking in July and August; CONANP says the area can be visited all year.
Permits and fees
No permit is needed to ride on the island. Holbox lies inside CONANP's Yum Balam protected area, which lists a fee of MXN 225 per person per day and asks visitors to use specialised guides for activities in the reserve.
Before you go
- Ride out to Punta Cocos or Punta Mosquito on a night near the new moon to see bioluminescence in the water.
- CONANP recommends light, long-sleeved clothing that can get wet.
- Isla de la Pasión, reached by boat, is home to thousands of seabirds if you want to add a trip on the water.
What to bring
- Helmet
- Spare tube, tyre levers and a pump
- Water and snacks
- Front and rear lights
- A layer for descents and stops
Getting ready for it
Time in the saddle matters more than speed.
If you have not ridden for a while, do two or three rides of an hour or two first so your legs and your seat are used to it.
Staying safe
- Golf carts and four-wheeler taxis share the sand streets, busiest from 10:00 to 18:00.
- Wear bright clothing and use lights wherever there is traffic.
- Check your brakes and tyres before you leave.
