Teotihuacan Valley Bike Ride

A ride on the road that circles the archaeological zone, linking its five gates (three on the west side, two on the east) and the villages of San Juan Teotihuacán and San Martín de las Pirámides. Inside, the ancient city's Avenue of the Dead runs for about 4 km.

The route

Perimeter road around the Teotihuacan archaeological zone, between San Juan Teotihuacán and San Martín de las Pirámides.

The site is 40 km north-east of Mexico City. Buses leave the Terminal del Norte about every 30 minutes and take roughly an hour; by car it is about 45 minutes on the toll road.

Permits and fees

No permit is needed on the perimeter road. Entry to the archaeological zone, open daily 8:00-17:00, is charged separately.

Before you go

  • Start early to avoid the midday heat and the crowds.
  • San Juan Teotihuacán and San Martín de las Pirámides have shops, bakeries and restaurants along the perimeter road.
  • No motorised transport is allowed inside the zone and there is a lot of walking; ask at the gate whether you can take a bike in or need to lock it outside.

What to bring

  • Helmet
  • Spare tube, tyre levers and a pump
  • Water and snacks
  • Front and rear lights
  • A layer for descents and stops

Getting ready for it

Time in the saddle matters more than speed.

If you have not ridden for a while, do two or three rides of an hour or two first so your legs and your seat are used to it.

Staying safe

  • Strong sun at about 2,300 m; use plenty of sunscreen.
  • Wear bright clothing and use lights wherever there is traffic.
  • Check your brakes and tyres before you leave.
