Tulum Ruins to Beach Ride

A short ride from Tulum town to the national park that protects the Maya site of Tulum, its mangroves and a strip of coast whose beaches, such as Playa Paraíso, are sea turtle nesting sites. Inside the park a coastal road and signed footpaths link the ruins and the beaches.

The route

Tulum town to the Tulum archaeological zone and the beaches of the Tulum National Park.

Start in Tulum Pueblo; CONANP puts the park 1 km from town, between km 179 and 183 of Federal Highway 307, and lists bicycles as one way to get there. Several shops in town rent bikes by the day.

When to go

CONANP says the park can be visited all year, with a dry season from December to April.

Permits and fees

CONANP charges MXN 125 per person per day (50% off for Mexican nationals and residents, 75% off for students and teachers, free for under-12s and seniors). The park is open daily 7:00-19:00.

Before you go

  • Inside the park, stay on the coastal road and signed footpaths, as CONANP requires.
  • Keep well away from marked turtle nests on the beaches.
  • Pets are not allowed in the park.
  • Bring a lock and a light for the ride back to town.

What to bring

  • Helmet
  • Spare tube, tyre levers and a pump
  • Water and snacks
  • Front and rear lights
  • A layer for descents and stops

Getting ready for it

Time in the saddle matters more than speed.

If you have not ridden for a while, do two or three rides of an hour or two first so your legs and your seat are used to it.

Staying safe

  • Traffic on Highway 307: Wikivoyage warns riders to take care on the highway, especially after dark.
  • Wear bright clothing and use lights wherever there is traffic.
  • Check your brakes and tyres before you leave.
