Arches Delicate Arch Trail Hike

You pass the Wolfe Ranch cabin and a wall of Ute petroglyphs, then climb steadily uphill to Delicate Arch. The heat in summer and ice in winter make it harder than its length suggests.

The route

Delicate Arch Trail from Wolfe Ranch to Delicate Arch and back.

The trail starts at the Wolfe Ranch car park, 21 km (13 miles) from the park entrance, which has 157 spaces. If it is full, you can park at the Delicate Arch Viewpoint lot, which adds 1.6 km (1 mile) each way.

When to go

Temperatures can pass 29°C (85°F) from April to September and often exceed 38°C (100°F) in July and August, while winter brings ice on the slickrock.

Permits and fees

Entrance costs $30 per vehicle or $15 per person for 7 days. The park did not use timed entry reservations in 2026.

Before you go

  • Carry at least 2-3 litres of water per person.
  • In hot weather, hike in the early morning or evening and avoid 10 am to 5 pm, when the sun is strongest.
  • Expect crowds at sunset, when sometimes hundreds of people gather at the arch.
  • Do not walk or climb on the arch.

What to bring

  • Shoes with grip that you have already worn in
  • At least 1.5 litres of water
  • Food you will actually want to eat
  • A warm or waterproof layer
  • The route, saved offline
  • Sun cream and a hat

Getting ready for it

If your longest walk lately is under two hours, do a few longer walks first, ideally with some climbing and the pack you will carry.

Step-ups and lunges twice a week make the descents much easier on your knees.

Staying safe

  • Summer heat and winter ice both make this trail harder than it looks, and rangers frequently rescue people who underestimated it.
  • Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
  • Turn around if the weather turns or the footing gets sketchy. The trail will still be there.
