Kyrgyz Ala Archa Day Hike
From the park lodge you climb into the Ak-Sai valley, named after the Ak-Sai glacier and waterfall at its head, to the stone Ratsek hut at 3,300 m. The surrounding peaks of the Kyrgyz Ala-Too rise above 4,000 m.

- Where
- Ala Archa, Kyrgyzstan
- Time
- 4-5 hours up to Ratsek hut
The route
Ak-Sai valley trail from the park lodge up to Ratsek hut, below the Ak-Sai glacier and waterfall.
The park entrance is about 35-41 km south of Bishkek, roughly a 30-minute drive. A taxi that waits a few hours costs about 1,000 som; marshrutka 265 and a park bus have also run from Bishkek.
When to go
The park is open all year; late summer and early autumn are the busiest times.
Permits and fees
An entrance fee is charged at the park gate; I found no current official amount.
Before you go
- Avoid weekends, when around 1,500 people visit.
- Campfires are banned; bring a gas stove if you want to cook.
- Ratsek hut offers bunk beds, or you can camp beside it, if you want to stay and go higher.
- Start early so you have time to get back down in daylight.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip that you have already worn in
- At least 1.5 litres of water
- Food you will actually want to eat
- A warm or waterproof layer
- The route, saved offline
- Sun cream and a hat
Getting ready for it
If your longest walk lately is under two hours, do a few longer walks first, ideally with some climbing and the pack you will carry.
Step-ups and lunges twice a week make the descents much easier on your knees.
Staying safe
- Altitude: the hut is at 3,300 m and the park rises to nearly 4,900 m, so turn back if you feel unwell.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
- Turn around if the weather turns or the footing gets sketchy. The trail will still be there.
