The route
Ella Rock from Ella town, along the railway line south of Ella then up through tea plantations.
Start in Ella town, near the railway station on the Main Line, about 271 km from Colombo Fort. All Main Line trains stop at Ella.
Before you go
- Use an OpenStreetMap-based app such as OsmAnd, Maps.me or Komoot and follow the path marked 'Footpath to Ella Rock' (or the shortcut).
- Keep away from villagers' homes along the way.
- Start early to reach the top before the day warms up.
What to bring
- Shoes with grip that you have already worn in
- At least 1.5 litres of water
- Food you will actually want to eat
- A warm or waterproof layer
- The route, saved offline
- Sun cream and a hat
Getting ready for it
If your longest walk lately is under two hours, do a few longer walks first, ideally with some climbing and the pack you will carry.
Step-ups and lunges twice a week make the descents much easier on your knees.
Staying safe
- Trains still use the line you walk along, so listen for them and step well clear.
- Local paths are often changed and hikers get lost; people then offer to guide you for a fee.
- Tell someone your route and when you expect to be back.
- Turn around if the weather turns or the footing gets sketchy. The trail will still be there.
