The route

Lachine Canal path, Old Port to Lachine.

Start at the Old Port end near Locks 1 and 2, or rent at Ma Bicyclette at the Atwater Pole, which has hybrids, e-bikes, gravel bikes and tandems.

When to go

Parks Canada maintains the path from 15 April to 15 November; the historic site is open all year.

Before you go

  • Ma Bicyclette at the Atwater Pole also does repairs and has child seats and trailers.
  • In some sections a separate stone-dust trail is kept for walkers only, so keep bikes on the main path.
  • Toilets are open in summer only.
  • At the Lachine end, the 1.4 km Père Marquette Promenade and René-Lévesque Park's outdoor sculpture gallery make a good turnaround point.

What to bring

  • Helmet
  • Spare tube, tyre levers and a pump
  • Water and snacks
  • Front and rear lights
  • A layer for descents and stops

Getting ready for it

Time in the saddle matters more than speed.

If you have not ridden for a while, do two or three rides of an hour or two first so your legs and your seat are used to it.

Staying safe

  • Wear bright clothing and use lights wherever there is traffic.
  • Check your brakes and tyres before you leave.
