The route
From Bovec beneath Mt Polovnik to Kobarid (Julian Alps route).
Start in Bovec, where several shops hire mountain bikes and e-bikes. The ride ends in Kobarid, so check local bus timetables for the return to Bovec, or ride back.
When to go
The Julian Alps tourist board recommends spring to autumn.
Before you go
- About 60% of the route is asphalt and the rest is gravel cart track and forest trail, so ride a mountain bike or e-bike.
- Stop at the Boka waterfall early in the ride.
- Kobarid at the finish has several museums worth a visit.
- Take a helmet and water; the Soča Valley tourist board also asks you to read its safe-cycling advice first.
What to bring
- Helmet
- Spare tube, tyre levers and a pump
- Water and snacks
- Front and rear lights
- A layer for descents and stops
Getting ready for it
Time in the saddle matters more than speed.
If you have not ridden for a while, do two or three rides of an hour or two first so your legs and your seat are used to it.
Staying safe
- Many routes in the valley are described in guidebooks and on maps but few are marked on the ground, so carry a map or GPS track.
- Wear bright clothing and use lights wherever there is traffic.
- Check your brakes and tyres before you leave.
